Pop Duo Paper Horse Tours North Yorkshire Special Schools

Pop Duo Paper Horse Tours North Yorkshire Special Schools

As part of Live Music Now Outside the Mainstream we were lucky enough to welcome a pop duo - Paper Horse - to Welburn Hall School at the end of November. We regularly welcome musicians from the Live Music Now initiative to special schools. As Music Coordinator at my school, I consider it really important for our pupils to experience real live musicians as many of them would not have the opportunity to see live performance out of school.

Sam and Zeb, the two brothers who form Paper Horse were a breath of fresh air. They performed a variety of songs, from Elvis, the Beatles, the Proclaimers to their own lyrical ballads. They engaged extremely well with our pupils and established a good rapport with their easy style from the start. At first our pupils listened politely but gradually, as they became more comfortable, began to clap and engage with the music. At one point one pupil got up and spontaneously started to dance to the music which encouraged a few others and by the end, it was a truly party atmosphere with everyone dancing to numbers such as Shake it off (Taylor Swift) and I would walk 500 miles (The Proclaimers). The songs appealed to all ages from our Y3 pupils to our Y11 cool guys who were waving their arms and dancing enthusiastically as if they were at a pop concert. Fortunately, the last number was a calming one so that pupils returned to lessons a little more sedately.

Comments afterwards from pupils included:

“I thought it was really good”; “It was really lively, fun and energetic” and “Very lively and we all danced!”.

All staff were impressed with the performance and the engagement level of pupils. When asked if pupils would like to see Paper Horse again, the unanimous response was “Yes, please!”.
