This network is open to all those working in North Yorkshire with children aged 0 to 5, including music practitioners, workshop leaders, playgroup leaders, children’s centre managers and staff.
Membership is FREE and includes invites to training events and conferences; opportunities to network with peers; free online resources; regular e-bulletins featuring the latest policy updates, research and sector news; and Early Years kits, featuring instruments, materials and ideas, which members may borrow.
Launched in September 2012, the Network has attracted 248 members from settings as diverse as arts organisations to community nurseries, as well as freelance music practitioners and Head Teachers.
Our CPD sessions are focused on providing members with techniques and ideas that they can easily put into practice. Previous topics have included using music, rhyme and song to teach phonics and tricky words; how technology can bring music into the learning environment; using music and movement in your setting; songs and chants to to support communication and literary development; using transition songs.
“The facilitator was very engaging and highly knowledgeable - leaves you wanting more!”

Our most recent Early Years Music Network Conference, ‘Why Should We Sing’, held on 7 February 2015 in Selby, included key note presentations from Professor Colwyn Trevarthen, early childhood psychologist and pyschobiologist; and Hugh Nankivell, composer, performer, educator and community musician. Workshops at the conference included ‘The Singing Day - songs for all occasions’; ‘Singing for Beginners’; and ‘Creating song with early years children’.
“So many brilliant ideas and practical ways to encourage children’s learning. A really useful, enjoyable day and well worth coming to”
- Reception Class Teacher
