About this project
Divas and DJs is an exceptional project that was first piloted in 2006. Run over the half term holidays acrossHarrogate District, the project is a lively mix of DJ-ing, live bands and computer-generated music, with workshops taking place throughout the week leading up to a final performance on the Friday evening where participants get to showcase their new skills.
Aimed at those involved in anti-social behaviour and others deemed "at risk", the response from the young people taking part has been outstanding. They all relish being involved in urban music-making and 100% of participants stated they want to do a similar project in the future.
"I've been to loads of cool places on holiday but this was the best thing I've ever done!" - Participant
The project was further developed in 2008 with the incorporation of additional elements such as event management skills and a larger, more professional public performance at the end of the week to provide a stronger focus for the young participants. These new elements enabled the participants to develop new skills and offered more opportunities for young people from the target audience to get involved. The 2008 project saw 101 young people take part in activities throughout the week and in 2009 a further 116 young people take part in workshops and raised the rafters in a fantastic final performance attended by an enthusiastic audience of family and friends.
The inclusion of a variety of partners including Extended Schools, Leeds Metropolitan University, youth clubs and the Youth Offending Team strengthens the project significantly. Partners provide staff to help manage sessions, which proves invaluable. Their close relationship with the target group means that they are more effective in encouraging active participation and diffusing any tensions as they arise. Their presence also removes barriers to participation for some of the young people who would normally be reluctant to take part.
