North Yorkshire is England's largest county covering 3,102 square miles from the North Sea in the east to within 10 miles of the Irish Sea in the west. Only 20% of the population lives in the two main towns of Harrogate and Scarborough. Importantly over 40% of the population lives in settlements with fewer than 3,000. This dispersed population presents significant challenges to service provision and communities in North Yorkshire are in the poorest fifth of English low level super output areas for access to a GP surgery, primary school, post office and food shop. Access as poor as this can lead to isolation and the core mission for NYMAZ is to provide those young people with least opportunity accessible ways into high quality music making and opportunities to progress.
