Are you a budding musician or singer? Find lessons both in school and at evenings and weekends.

Choosing and buying an instrument

Choosing the right instrument to learn can be tricky. This guide from the Philharmonia Orchestra explains each of the instruments in the orchestral family.

North Yorkshire County Council gives advice on hiring instruments if you’d like to give something a try.

If you are thinking about learning the piano, composer Elissa Milne gives this useful advice in her blog post about what to do before buying.

Gear4Music offer extensive demos of different instruments and equipment.

MusicTeachers.co.uk has a premium section on their website that offers useful advice for parents about buying instruments, keeping children motivated for practice, and how to work with a teacher.

Sourcing an instrumental teacher

A big question to ask if whether your child is the right age to start learning an instrument. This American blog post by Dr Robert Cutietta discusses some of the issues to consider.

Composer Elissa Milne also discusses what the cost of lessons is - have a read here.

It is important to find a teacher that your child gets along with. Teachers often advertise locally, so check the notice boards in your local music shop. Netmums can also be a useful resource - search for ‘music classes’. For some advice about what to look for in a teacher, have a read of these blog posts from LifeHacker.co.uk and MusicLessonsResource.com.

The North Yorkshire Music Hub (which is lead by North Yorkshire Council Council Music Service) has a large database of teachers who can provide music lessons in school or at music centres. They can also provide help with music lesson fees. See their website for more info.

MusicTeachers.co.uk also has a searchable database of teachers.
