Monday 15 February and Thursday 18 February
Morning workshops 10-11.30am
Evening workshops 5-6.30pm
You can attend just the morning or evening workshops, or all of them!
Join NYMAZ and sound artist Duncan Chapman, from South Asian arts organisation, Manasamitra, in this two-part interactive workshop series to explore the exciting world of field recording and composition.
• Learn how to record, curate and mix your own recorded sounds into an experimental soundscape.
• Develop new techniques and skills as an introduction into the intricate world of sound recording.
• Explore how to bring an expressive new life to everyday sounds of the world, from familiar ones you love to hear, to the weird and the wonderful.
All sessions are linked by the theme of happiness.
No specialist equipment is required – as long as you have a phone or tablet plus access to a computer, you can take part! If you don’t have access to these devices, contact us here at NYMAZ as soon as possible, and no later than Monday 8 February, and we will do our best to connect you with the right equipment.
This project will lead to a celebratory performance of our collective recorded sounds, via a Facebook live broadcast on 26 February at 6pm.
The sounds created and collected will also be shared as part of a much larger live performance with Manasamitra’s very own Supriya Nagarajan and Duncan Chapman: 100 Human Voices, a musical celebration of happiness bringing together 100 young people from across Yorkshire, combining the field recordings you will create, with singing, recitation and spoken word from different cultural traditions.
There are two workshop options during the February half-term, each of which will focus on sounds linked to that time of day: morning sessions 1 & 2 (Monday and Thursday 10-11.30am) or evening sessions 1 & 2 (Monday and Thursday 5-6.30pm). Sessions 1 & 2 are linked so attendance at both is required. You can attend all four sessions or opt to focus just on night or daytime sounds. All workshops are free, and no previous experience or ‘musical’ skills are needed to take part!
