Find out how your young people can benefit from a high energy singing and signing workshop!
Accessible Arts & Media (AAM) is York’ award‐winning arts and media charity that inspires disabled people and young people to communicate through creativity, and they’re working in partnership with NYMAZ to offer more Apprentice-led singing and signing workshops across North Yorkshire.
What is an Apprentice-led workshop?
AAM has been training members of our widely renowned Hands & Voices Singing and Singing Choir (adults with learning difficulties and disabilities) as apprentice workshop leaders since 2002. Throughout this time we have worked with a range of groups up and down the UK from the Royal Academy of Music to our local playgroup. Once trained the Apprentices, supported by one of AAM’s specialist trainers lead a high energy singing and signing taster workshop.
Who is it for?
Each session is tailored to suit the needs of the group we are working with and for this round we are prioritising developing inclusive partnerships between disabled and non-disabled children and young people either in or out of school. Please note, any sessions taking place during school time must be a partnership between a mainstream and SEND school. Tasters provide a fantastic opportunity for disabled and non-disabled children and young people to work together as equals to:
• Learn to sing and sign and experience other accessible forms of music-making;
• Experience an extremely positive model of disability – being taught by AAM’s extremely talented Apprentices with learning difficulties and disabilities.
What are the benefits?
After each workshop groups are left with the resources used in the session, as well as ideas for future work. AAM is keen to hear from Schools or youth groups who have an interest in setting up their own inclusive choirs in North Yorkshire, as it may be possible for AAM and NYMAZ to further develop these taster sessions.
Anyone who has ever experienced one of AAM’s Apprentice-led workshops before is always amazed at how much good healthy fun it is and a really inspirational way to learn. Here’s some feedback we have received:
“An excellent workshop. I was very impressed by how clear, informative and professional the deliverers were. It was so reassuring to see integration working so well in practice.”
“It was a lovely afternoon, delivered at just the right pace for our children. The songs we learned were catchy and easy to follow and when we all came together at the end to sing through them as a group, it was so good to see our children with special needs participating fully alongside the mainstream children.”
How can I find out more?
We are looking for youth groups or Schools to partner with and thanks to generous funding from Youth Music we can offer up to a 3 hour Apprentice-led taster session for just £50.
