The ‘Wish You Were Here’ project came to an end on Saturday 21 June, with one huge performance of all seven new songs about North Yorkshire communities, written by the people who live there.
After a series of fantastic songwriting workshops in each of the North Yorkshire districts, led by Rebecca Gross and her team of music leaders, we all congregated at Grassington CE Primary School for a last rehearsal, and to meet each other for the first time.
Rehearsals, running all that morning, involved a brass band from Ryedale; choirs from Pateley Bridge, Helmsley and Marsk; folk musicians from Whitby; singers and signers from Selby; and an MC from Reeth, among many others!
At 2pm the seven groups, now forming one big Wish You Were Here band, made their way up the hill to The Square in the middle of Grassington village, to entertain the gathering crowds. And the crowds were not disappointed!
Some of the feedback we received on the day:
“Lovely to see young people up front and gaining confidence”
“A great experience, lots of undiscovered talent! (Found)”
“Saturdays henceforth will be lacklustre after today”
“Lovely community spirit”
“Really enjoyed it! A delightfully varied programme”.
